According to local police, a semi-trailer truck collided with a small bus carrying a predominantly elderly group of individuals, leading to one of the deadliest road accidents in recent Canadian history.

The crash took place at the junction of two major roads near the town of Carberry, situated approximately 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Winnipeg, the provincial capital.

Assistant Commissioner Rob Hill, in charge of the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police, confirmed the devastating toll during a televised news conference, describing the incident as a day marked by tragedy and immense sadness for Manitoba and the entire country. The bus was carrying around 25 passengers, most of whom were elderly.

While the drivers of both vehicles survived the collision, authorities refrained from disclosing any details regarding responsibility for the crash.

Visuals shared by Canadian media outlets depicted a burnt-out white minivan-sized vehicle and a blue truck with severe front-end damage.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his deep sorrow upon learning the "incredibly tragic" news through a tweet.

“The news from Carberry, Manitoba is incredibly tragic. I’m sending my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones today, and I’m keeping the injured in my thoughts. I cannot imagine the pain those affected are feeling – but Canadians are here for you,” Trudeau wrote.

As the investigation into the crash unfolds, the community mourns the loss of lives in this devastating accident, reminding the nation of the importance of road safety and vigilance while traveling. (ILKHA)
