Magnitude 7.2 earthquake strikes near Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean

The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 280 km (174 miles) southwest of Tonga, with a depth of 167.4 km (104 miles), as stated by the USGS.

Fortunately, there is no immediate threat of a tsunami, as confirmed by the U.S. Tsunami Warning System. The system has declared that there is no danger of a tsunami impacting the U.S. West Coast, British Columbia, or Alaska following the seismic activity.

Australia's Bureau Of Meteorology has also reassured the public, stating that Australia is not under any tsunami threat resulting from this earthquake.

Initially, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported the earthquake's magnitude as 7, locating it near the southern region of the Fiji Islands.
