Erdogan and Aliyev pledge to strengthen relations and swiftly resolve Zangezur issue
In a joint press conference held in Baku, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Türkiye and President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan expressed their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and resolving the Zangezur issue swiftly.
Erdogan began by expressing his delight at embarking on his first foreign visit after his inauguration to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Azerbaijan on the same day. He emphasized the deep bond between Turkey and Azerbaijan, referring to them as two brotherly countries, and reiterated their determination to uphold the principle of “two states, one nation” in the future.
“One of the steps we are now taking and will be taking is related to the Türkiye-Azerbaijan University. It is about time to establish such a university between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, whereby the Azerbaijani youth will be able to easily come to Türkiye and the Turkish youth will have the opportunity to receive university education in Azerbaijan,” President Erdogan stated.
Erdogan also discussed the significance of energy cooperation, stating, “Europe is highly concerned about the gas they will be receiving through Türkiye. They are constantly making requests about it. We are doing and will continue to do our part on this topic.” He highlighted the importance of defense industry collaboration and reiterated Turkey's commitment to supporting education in this field.
Regarding agriculture and husbandry cooperation, President Erdogan acknowledged the successful joint efforts of private companies in both countries. He further emphasized the achievements of Turkish contracting companies in implementing infrastructure projects in Azerbaijan's transportation sector.
Erdogan turned his attention to the Zangezur Corridor, stating: “A swift settlement of the Zangezur issue will win us two important gains. Taking steps about the highway and the railway will enable much stronger connection between Türkiye and Nakhchivan, between Iğdır and Nakhchivan. The establishment of such connections will also help build much stronger relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.”
President Aliyev of Azerbaijan congratulated President Erdogan on his electoral victory and highlighted Turkey's transformation into a global power center under his leadership. He expressed his gratitude for Turkey's unwavering support during the Patriotic War and emphasized their shared stance in foreign policy. President Aliyev stated, “The Türkiye-Azerbaijan unity is of critical importance to the development, stability, and security of the region.”
The joint press conference concluded with both leaders reiterating the strong bond between Turkey and Azerbaijan and their determination to advance their shared interests in foreign policy for the benefit of the region as a whole. (ILKHA)
