Following information about the presence of migrants in life rafts off the coast of Antalya, Coast Guard boats were swiftly dispatched to the area.

The migrants, who had been pushed into Turkish territorial waters by Greek authorities and managed to reach Gürmenli Island on their own, were safely brought ashore by the Turkish Coast Guard.

After the successful rescue operation, the migrants were transferred to the provincial migration office, where they will receive further assistance and support.

This incident once again highlighted Türkiye's significant role in managing migration, given its strategic geographical position as a gateway between Europe and Asia, and the responsibilities it entails in dealing with the origin, transit, and destination of migrants.

Türkiye has been facing a growing influx of migrants seeking refuge, largely influenced by recent events in the region. Currently, the country hosts approximately 4 million refugees and asylum-seekers, with over 3.7 million Syrians benefiting from temporary protection. However, the substantial number of migrants has strained Türkiye's resources and infrastructure, requiring extensive efforts from the government and various organizations to effectively address their needs.

The Turkish Coast Guard's unwavering commitment to maritime security and preventing irregular migration deserves recognition. In 2022, their proactive measures resulted in the interception of a significant number of irregular migrants, totaling 285,027 compared to 162,000 in the previous year. These efforts underscore Türkiye's dedication to border control and the well-being of migrants, despite the mounting challenges.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the complex dynamics surrounding migration in the region and highlights the importance of international cooperation in addressing this pressing issue.

Despite the strain it places on the country, Türkiye continues to play a vital role in providing assistance and support to those seeking refuge. The successful rescue by the Turkish Coast Guard exemplifies their unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of migrants in distress at sea, reflecting Türkiye's ongoing efforts to effectively manage migration.
