Former Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon questioned in SNP finances investigation

The investigation relates to the finances of the Scottish National Party (SNP), known for its pro-independence stance, according to local reports.

According to Police Scotland, a 52-year-old woman, later identified as Sturgeon, was taken into custody as a suspect in connection with the ongoing inquiry into the funding and financial matters of the SNP. However, after being held for approximately six hours, she was released without charge, as is customary for British police who do not disclose suspects' identities until formal charges are filed.

Following her release, Sturgeon expressed her shock and deep distress at her arrest.

“To find myself in the situation I did today when I am certain I have committed no offence is both a shock and deeply distressing. I know that this ongoing investigation is difficult for people, and I am grateful that so many continue to show faith in me and appreciate that I would never do anything to harm either the SNP or the country,” Sturgeon wrote on Twitter.

“Obviously, given the nature of this process, I cannot go into detail. However, I do wish to say this, and to do so in the strongest possible terms. Innocence is not just a presumption I am entitled to in law. I know beyond doubt that I am in fact innocent of any wrongdoing,” she added.

The SNP has affirmed its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and stated its intention to refrain from public discussion while the inquiry progresses.

The investigation was initiated by Scottish police in 2021 to scrutinize the allocation of over £600,000 ($754,000) earmarked for a campaign promoting Scottish independence. Earlier in the investigation, two former SNP officials, Colin Beattie (former treasurer) and Peter Murrell (former chief executive), were arrested and questioned. Like Sturgeon, they were subsequently released pending further inquiries.

It is worth noting that Murrell is Sturgeon's husband, and following his arrest in April, authorities conducted a search of their residence in Glasgow. (ILKHA)
