Turkish households allocate highest share of expenditure to food and non-alcoholic beverages

According to the results of the 2022 Household Budget Survey; while the expenditures on food and non-alcoholic beverages had the highest share in total consumption expenditures with a rate of 22.8%, the share of expenditures on housing and rent took second place with 22.4% and transportation expenditures took third place with 21.3%.

The groups which had the lowest shares in total expenditures were educational services with 1.4%, health expenditures with 2.2% and entertainment and culture expenditures with 2.5%.

Consumption expenditure per equivalent adult is obtained by taking into account household size and composition in order to make consumption expenditures of households comparable. The monthly average consumption expenditure was estimated as 12 thousand 159 TL per household and 6 thousand 259 TL per equivalent person.

Expenditure patterns changed according to main source of income

While households whose main source of income was wages and salaries allocated 22.5% share for transportation, 21.0% for food and non-alcoholic beverages and 20.8% for housing and rent, household whose main source of income was entrepreneurial income allocated 27.2% share for transportation, 22.9% for food and non-alcoholic beverages and 18.5% for housing and rent.

Share of food expenditures of low-income households was twice more than high-income households

When looking at the distribution of consumption expenditures by quintiles ordered by income in 2022, it was observed that the share of food and non-alcoholic beverages expenditures was 35.8%, housing and rent was 29.3%, transportation expenditures was 8.3%, furniture and houses appliances expenditures was 5.5% for households in the first quintile (the lowest quintile).The share of transportation expenditures was 28.5%, housing and rent expenditures was 19.3%, food and non-alcoholic beverages was 16.6% and restaurant and hotels was 6.8% for households in the fifth quintile (the highest quintile).

One-person households allocated one and a half times more share to housing and rent than crowded households

 Considering the distribution of consumption expenditures by household size in 2022; one-person households allocated 27.7% to housing and rent expenditures, 20.4% to transportation expenditures and 16.8% to food and non-alcoholic beverage expenditures.

Households with a household size of 7 or more allocated a share of 35.9% to food and non-alcoholic beverage expenditures, 18.8% to housing and rent expenditures and 14.4% to transportation expenditures. (ILKHA)
