Among the victims was a former police official, while over 50 individuals sustained injuries near Nabawi Mosque. Abdul Nafi Takor, spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, confirmed the death toll at 11, but there are concerns that the numbers could escalate as more information becomes available.

The memorial service was specifically targeted funeral of the provincial deputy governor who was killed in an attack on Tuesday. This attack, which took place in the provincial capital of Faizabad, also claimed the life of the deputy governor's driver.

Moazuddin Ahmadi, an Afghan official responsible for information and culture, confirmed the explosion on Thursday and the killing of Safiullah Samim, a former police chief in Baghlan.

No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressed his condemnation of the incident, denouncing the bombing of mosques as an act of terrorism that goes against human and Islamic principles, conveying his sentiments through a tweet.

The funeral of Ahmadi, held on Wednesday, saw the attendance of numerous senior Afghan officials and hundreds of residents from Faizabad.
