The Japan Meteorological Agency reports that a 24-hour period saw a record-breaking deluge engulfing 23 locations across eight prefectures, causing rivers to swell and leading local governments to issue severe flood warnings.

The catastrophic weather event was fueled by the convergence of warm, moisture-laden air from Typhoon Mawar and a rain front near Honshu, the country's main island, resulting in widespread flooding and landslides. Evacuation advisories were issued to over two million residents in Gifu, Shizuoka, Aichi, and Mie prefectures as a precautionary measure. Train services were suspended due to the heavy rainfall, leaving many commuters stranded.

Although Typhoon Mawar weakened from its super typhoon status, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is urging citizens to remain vigilant. Eastern Japan faces imminent risks of landslides, rising river levels, and further flooding. The JMA has specifically warned about heightened landslide risks in western regions. The agency attributes the increased activity of the rainy season front to the influx of humid air from Typhoon Mawar, which had already caused devastation in Guam earlier in the week.

According to local reports, numerous areas in Japan experienced heavy localized rainfall, breaking June precipitation records. The intensity of the downpours has created significant challenges for affected communities, with roads turning into torrents and homes being inundated. Tragically, despite rescue efforts, a man trapped in a submerged vehicle in Toyohashi, central Japan, lost his life.

The impact of Typhoon Mawar has led to widespread disruptions across the country, including evacuation advisories for over a million people, flight cancellations, and the halting of various modes of transportation. Additionally, thousands of homes are currently without power, further adding to the difficulties faced by affected residents.

Rescue and relief operations are underway as authorities and emergency teams work to locate missing individuals, provide assistance to affected communities, and restore normalcy in the affected regions. The situation remains fluid, and residents are urged to stay updated with official information and follow the instructions of local authorities to ensure their safety. (ILKHA)
