Turkish coast guard rescues 56 migrants pushed back by Greek authorities
In a swift and successful operation, the Turkish Coast Guard rescued a group of 56 migrants who were stranded after being denied entry by Greek authorities while attempting to cross Turkish territorial waters.
The migrants, discovered in rubber boats near the coastal areas of Izmir in western Türkiye, were promptly rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard, ensuring their safety and well-being.
Following the rescue, the migrants were transported to the provincial migration office, where they will receive further assistance. Türkiye, located between Europe and Asia, has long been involved in migration as a key player in origin, transit, and destination. Recent events in the region have led to a rise in the number of migrants seeking refuge in Türkiye, placing significant challenges on the country's resources.
Currently, Türkiye provides shelter to approximately 4 million refugees and asylum-seekers, with over 3.7 million Syrians receiving temporary protection. This influx of migrants has strained resources and infrastructure, requiring substantial efforts from the government and various organizations to effectively address their needs.
The Turkish Coast Guard's dedication to maritime security and the prevention of irregular migration deserves recognition. In 2022, they intercepted a significant number of irregular migrants, totaling 285,027 compared to 162,000 the previous year. These proactive measures by the coast guard highlight Türkiye's unwavering commitment to border control and the well-being of migrants, even in the face of mounting challenges.
This incident serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics surrounding migration in the region and the importance of international cooperation in addressing this issue. Türkiye continues to play a crucial role in providing assistance and support to those seeking refuge, despite the strain it places on the country. (ILKHA)
