Masoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and a prominent Kurdish leader, has extended his congratulations to Recep Tayyip Erdogan following his re-election as Türkiye's president.
Barzani personally conveyed his congratulations to Erdogan via a telephone call, according to a brief statement issued by Barzani Headquarters.
“President Masoud Barzani congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan by telephone on his re-election as President of Türkiye,” reads a brief statement by Barzani Headquarters.
Türkiye held presidential and parliamentary elections on May 14, 2023, with the aim of electing a president for a five-year term.
Notably, this election marked a significant milestone as it was the first time a run-off was necessary in a Turkish presidential election.
In the second round of voting, President Erdogan emerged as the winner, securing over 52% of the total votes, surpassing his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
President Barzani's congratulatory message to President Erdogan highlights the recognition and engagement between the Kurdish leadership and the Turkish government, acknowledging the significance of ongoing dialogue and cooperation between the two parties.
As Türkiye navigates the aftermath of the election and works towards unifying the nation, the messages of goodwill from prominent regional figures such as President Barzani hold importance in fostering understanding and promoting stability in the region. (ILKHA)
