Türkiye expresses concern about incidents in Northern Kosovo, calls for dialogue
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has expressed its concern over recent incidents in the northern part of Kosovo, highlighting the potential negative impact on regional security and stability.
In a press release issued today, the Ministry urged all parties involved to refrain from violence and emphasized the importance of avoiding actions that could further escalate tensions.
Appreciating the constructive role played by KFOR (Kosovo Force) in maintaining stability, the Ministry expressed sadness upon learning that some KFOR soldiers sustained minor injuries during the incidents. KFOR, a NATO peacekeeping force, has been actively engaged in preventing the situation from worsening.
The Ministry underlined the significance of the ongoing dialogue process as the key to reducing tension and establishing lasting peace and stability in the region. Dialogue among the parties involved is seen as the most effective means of addressing the current challenges.
Tensions escalated as clashes between Serbian protesters and NATO peacekeeping soldiers unfolded in northern Kosovo. Over 30 NATO soldiers were injured while defending three town halls in the region. The protests were triggered by the appointment of ethnic Albanian mayors in a predominantly Serb-populated area of Kosovo, which followed elections boycotted by the Serbs. This move drew criticism from the United States and its allies, who rebuked Pristina for the decision.
In response to the situation, Serbia's president has put the army on the highest level of combat alert, reflecting the growing concerns and volatile nature of the events in the region.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry's statement emphasizes the urgent need for dialogue and de-escalation in order to achieve long-term peace and stability in the region. The international community continues to closely monitor the situation, with hopes for a peaceful resolution to the tensions in northern Kosovo. (ILKHA)
