Since last Monday, around 95 people in Hammanskraal, a region north of the capital Pretoria, have sought medical attention due to cholera symptoms.

Laboratory tests conducted on Sunday confirmed 19 cases of cholera, with 37 individuals in critical condition being admitted to hospitals, including a three-year-old child and nine adults.

The Gauteng health department emphasized the importance of maintaining proper hand hygiene and urged the public to take extra precautionary measures.

In response to the situation, the city of Tshwane has cautioned residents of Hammanskraal and nearby areas against consuming tap water and has arranged for the supply of water tankers.

Cholera is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It primarily spreads through contaminated water and food, particularly in areas with inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene practices. Cholera can lead to severe diarrhea and dehydration, which can be life-threatening if left untreated.

The symptoms of cholera typically include sudden onset of profuse watery diarrhea, vomiting, and leg cramps. The rapid loss of fluids and electrolytes from the body can result in dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and potentially lead to shock. Severe cases of cholera can be fatal within hours if appropriate medical intervention, such as rehydration therapy, is not promptly provided.

Preventing cholera involves ensuring access to safe drinking water, proper sanitation, and promoting good hygiene practices, including handwashing with soap. Vaccines are also available for cholera prevention, which can be recommended in certain high-risk areas or during outbreaks.

Efforts to control cholera outbreaks involve prompt identification and treatment of cases, improving sanitation and access to clean water, and raising awareness about preventive measures in affected communities. (ILKHA)
