Tragic stampede at soccer match leaves nine dead and dozens Injured in El Salvador
Nine people were killed and numerous others were injured during a stampede at a quarter-final soccer match in the Salvadoran league.
The incident took place at Monumental stadium in Cuscatlan, with the clubs Alianza and FAS competing.
The National Civil Police confirmed the death toll and stated that at least two injured individuals were in critical condition.
The match was halted after 16 minutes when frantic fans in the stands attracted attention by carrying injured individuals to the pitch.
Live television coverage showed Alianza fans storming onto the field to receive medical assistance.
Pedro Hernandez, president of El Salvador's top soccer division, stated that the stampede occurred when fans forced their way through a stadium gate. (ILKHA)
