Turkish coast guard rescue 13 irregular migrants in Aegean Sea
The Turkish Coast Guard recently accomplished a successful rescue mission by saving 13 stranded migrants who had been forced back by Greek authorities while attempting to cross Turkish waters.
The migrants were traveling in rubber boats near the coastal areas of Izmir and Aydın in western Türkiye. After their rescue, the migrants were safely taken to the local migration office for further assistance.
Türkiye has a longstanding history as a significant country in terms of migration. It serves as a country of origin, transit, and destination for migrants due to its strategic location between Europe and Asia. Recent events in the region have led to an increase in the number of migrants seeking refuge in Turkey, further highlighting the challenges faced by the country.
Currently, Türkiye is providing shelter to approximately 4 million refugees and asylum-seekers, with over 3.7 million Syrians receiving temporary protection. The influx of migrants has strained resources and infrastructure, necessitating diligent efforts by the government and various organizations to effectively address their needs.
The Turkish Coast Guard's dedication to ensuring maritime security and preventing irregular migration is commendable. In 2022, they intercepted an astonishing 285,027 irregular migrants, a significant rise compared to the previous year's figure of 162,000.
These proactive measures by the coast guard demonstrate Türkiye's commitment to border control and the safety of migrants, even in the face of mounting challenges. (ILKHA)
