Azerbaijan pardons 801 convicts in honor of national leader's anniversary
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has signed an order to grant amnesty to 801 convicts on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Heydar Aliyev, the National Leader of the Azerbaijani people.
The amnesty appeal was made by several convicted persons, their families, the Commissioner for Human Rights of Azerbaijan, and human rights protection organizations.
Out of the 801 convicts, 463 were released from imprisonment, 220 were released from the unserved half of the imprisonment sentence, and 118 were released from other punishments that did not involve deprivation of liberty.
This act of amnesty is the largest in the history of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan in terms of the number of persons it applies to. (ILKHA)
