Manipur state witnessed the escalation of violence after a tribal group's protest march turned violent, prompting the dispatch of thousands of soldiers.

In an attempt to contain the unrest, authorities imposed an internet blackout and authorized shoot-at-sight orders in extreme cases.

The situation remained tense as fresh violence erupted on Friday night, with reports of rioters looting arms and ammunition from police stations.

Local media confirmed a total of 54 fatalities, with bodies being stored in hospital morgues across Imphal and Churachandpur districts.

Security forces, led by Manipur's director general of police, expressed efforts to bring the situation under control, while urging the return of stolen weapons.

The official death toll has not yet been released by security forces and the Manipur government.

The flow of information has been impeded due to the internet blackout, leaving details of the latest clashes scarce.

Neighboring Nagaland state reported that approximately 13,000 individuals sought refuge from the violence at an Indian army unit. (ILKHA)
