Turkish FM says Russia confirms quadrilateral meeting on Syria for May 10
The Turkish foreign minister has announced that Russia has confirmed May 10 as the date for a quadrilateral meeting involving Turkey, Russia, Iran, and the Syrian regime.
However, it remains uncertain whether Iran's foreign minister will attend the meeting due to a possible Africa tour. Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu shared this information during an interview with Turkish broadcaster TV24.
In regards to the presence of Turkish troops in northern Syria, Cavusoglu emphasized that withdrawing forces from the area would create a vacuum that could be filled by terrorist groups. He expressed concerns about the repercussions, stating that terrorist organizations target and expel those who oppose them, leading to a potential influx of immigrants towards Türkkiye's borders. Additionally, he highlighted the significant threat such a situation would pose to national security.
Cavusoglu acknowledged Türkiye's engagement with the Syrian regime and its administration, indicating the possibility of issuing a joint statement following the upcoming quadrilateral meeting. However, he stated that the specific outcomes of the talks cannot be predetermined.
In December of the previous year, defense ministers and intelligence chiefs from Turkey, Russia, and the Syrian regime met in Moscow and agreed to continue holding tripartite meetings to ensure stability in Syria and the broader region. Iran was also involved in these discussions, with Turkey expressing its satisfaction in Iran's participation in the process. (ILKHA)
