Mexican police Mexico arrests drug cartel lieutenant near Texas border
Mexican authorities announced on Monday that they have detained a high-ranking member of the Metros faction of the Gulf drug cartel, who has been linked to 23 attacks on police and nine on military personnel.
The suspect, identified as Hugo Salinas Cortinas, also known as "La Cabra" (The Goat), was apprehended on Friday.
He was allegedly involved in drug and migrant smuggling along a stretch of the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River and operated in the towns of Camargo and Miguel Aleman, across the border from the Texas towns of Rio Grande City and Roma.
Salinas Cortinas was found in possession of two firearms and approximately 600 fentanyl pills. The Gulf cartel has become fragmented into rival factions since the capture and extradition of several top leaders in recent years.
In 2021, Salinas Cortinas' wife was arrested in Roma, Texas after police discovered over $800,000 in cash hidden in shoeboxes and backpacks in her home. (ILKHA)
