Sweden expels five Russian diplomats over espionage allegations
Sweden has expelled five employees of the Russian Embassy in Stockholm on suspicion of espionage.
The Swedish Security Service reportedly received a list of suspected Russian intelligence officers, leading to the expulsion.
SAPO, the domestic security agency, has claimed that every third Russian diplomat in Sweden is an intelligence officer.
This follows Norway's recent expulsion of 15 Russian diplomats accused of spying. In addition, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden jointly investigated suspicions of Russian spying in the Baltic Sea and North Sea using civilian vessels, with the findings to be revealed in an upcoming episode of their series titled "Shadow War".
Sweden and Finland have applied to join NATO for protection following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with Finland already joining and Sweden's application delayed due to objections from NATO members Turkey and Hungary. (ILKHA)
