European Union diplomats evacuated from Sudan with French assistance amid conflict
The first batch of European Union diplomats from Sudan were being evacuated on Sunday, with assistance from France.
In a statement on Twitter, European Council President Charles Michel thanked the efforts and resilience of EU diplomats and France, which is leading the evacuation operation, as well as Djibouti.
The recent conflict between Sudan's army and a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has left many foreigners, including diplomats and aid workers, stranded in the country.
Evacuation efforts are taking place both by air and by road, with some evacuations taking place through Port Sudan on the Red Sea, which is about 650 km northeast of Khartoum by air, but about 800 km by road. (ILKHA)
