Magnitude 4.0 earthquake jolts eastern Türkiye
An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 occurred in the Çaldıran district of eastern Türkiye's Van province on Monday.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency of Türkiye, the earthquake happened at 07:07 TSI, with its epicenter located at 39.198 degrees north latitude and 43.848 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 7 kilometers.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties or significant damage caused by the earthquake.
However, on February 6, a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria, resulting in over 50,000 deaths and more than 100,000 injuries across ten provinces in Türkiye. Even neighboring Elazığ and Batman provinces experienced some damages.
The earthquake affected at least 13.5 million people and 4 million buildings, with thousands of people being trapped under rubble when buildings collapsed.
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change conducted damage inspections for 763,000 buildings, revealing that at least 41,791 buildings in ten provinces of Türkiye were heavily damaged or destroyed, leaving around 150,000 people homeless.
The earthquake was a significant tragedy, and it highlights the importance of being prepared for earthquakes and having proper building codes and regulations in place to minimize loss of life and damage in the future. (ILKHA)
