Türkiye’s death toll from devastating earthquakes passes 50,000, says disaster management agency
The number of people who died in the devastating earthquakes increased to 50,096, the head of Türkiye's Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency Yunus Sezer said on Monday.
“Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred in Türkiye, at least 50,096 people were killed and 107,204 others injured,” Sezer told reporters following the meeting of the Earthquake Research Commission.
On 6 February, at 04:17 local time, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Türkiye and northern and western Syria.
It was followed by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake at 13:24. This earthquake was centered 95 km (59 mi) north-northeast from the first.
It was felt as far as Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus, and the Black Sea coast of Türkiye. There were more than 10,000 aftershocks in the three weeks that followed.
There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities in Türkiye and Syria. (ILKHA)
