Turkish Foreign Minister meets with his Egyptian counterpart in Cairo for first talks in over decade
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in Cairo, Egypt, on Saturday.
“Bilateral consultations commence in Cairo between Egypt and Türkiye delegations, headed by FMs Shoukry & Çavuşoğlu. Discussions tackle various aspects of the bilateral relations between both countries, and regional & Intl issues of mutual interest,” the Egyptian Foreign Ministry wrote on Twitter.
Egypt–Turkey relations strongly deteriorated in the period following the overthrow of the Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013.
On 23 November 2013, the Egyptian government expelled the Turkish ambassador to the country, Huseyin Avni Botsali, and recalled their ambassador from Ankara indefinitely after several months of tensions with Turkey's ruling AKP-led government.
In response, Turkey also barred the Egyptian ambassador, who was out of the country at the time and declared him a persona non grata.
However, Egyptian-Turkish relations have witnessed positive developments since 2021.
In early 2021, Türkiye signaled that it was seeking to improve relations with Egypt and to open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
In February, Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry traveled to the two quake-hit countries, Türkiye and Syria, to show his country's solidarity and support their respective recovery processes. (ILKHA)
