According to local sources, the explosion occurred late Tuesday night at a series of legal mines that are linked.

“Nation, department, municipality, and relief agencies continue to work to rescue the 10 miners who are still trapped. At this time, 11 fatalities are reported to us and the Ubaté hospital is treating 9 miners, 6 of whom have already been discharged,” said Nicolás García, the governor of the Cundinamarca department.

The miners were trapped 900 meters (2,950 feet) underground, making access difficult for the more than 100 rescuers working on the search, Garicia told Blu Radio. (ILKHA)
