Rabbani brothers freed from Guantanamo after 20 years without charge

Two brothers, who were arrested in Karachi in 2002, said that they had been tortured by CIA officers, before being transferred to Guantanamo.

“Fabulous to speak with Ahmed & Abdul Rabbani, back in Karachi after 20 yrs injustice in Guantanamo Bay. I am headed down there on a cheap & horrendous flight via 4 countries, arriving Sunday, as Ahmed owes me dinner,” Clive Stafford Smith, a lawyer with the 3D Centre who has represented both men, wrote on Twitter.

On December 9, 2014, the United States Senate Intelligence Committee published the 600-page unclassified summary of a 6,000-page report on the CIA's use of torture.

While some of the CIA's captives were identified as having only been subjected to torture that had been authorized by Washington, other captives, like Rabbani, were identified as having been tortured by CIA officials who did not have authorization.

According to the Intelligence Committee, Rabbani was "Subjected to forced standing, attention grasps, and cold temperatures without blankets in November 2002." (ILKHA)
