Strong earthquake kills 3, injures more than 800 in northwestern Iran
At least three people were killed and 816 others injured in the 5.9 magnitude earthquake in the city of Khoy, West Azarbaijan Province, northwestern Iran, the governor-general of West Azarbaijan Province said.
Mohammad Sadegh Motamadian noted that 30 injured people in the earthquake were hospitalized in this city and 34 people were sent to health centers in Salmas, a nearby town.
He also stated that between 40 to 50 percent of houses in 70 villages near the epicenter collapsed while many buildings, including a hospital, were damaged in Khoy.
The 5.9 magnitude earthquake was reported at around 9.44 p.m. local time on Sunday at a depth of 7 kilometers (4.34 miles), with the epicenter near Khoy.
The tremor was felt in Tabriz, the capital of neighboring East Azarbaijan province, and all the surrounding towns in the province, according to local sources. (ILKHA)
