German Defense Minister Lambrecht resigns
German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht resigned on Monday.
“I have today asked the Federal Chancellor for dismissal from the office of the Federal Minister of Defence,” Lambrecht announced in a written statement.
“The months-long media focus on my person hardly allows for objective reporting and discussion about servicemen and women and security policy decisions in the interest of the citizens of Germany,” Lambrecht said.
She added that “the valuable work of the soldiers and many people in my department must stand in the foreground.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has accepted Lambrecht’s resignation, a spokeswoman for the cabinet said in a press conference.
Lambrecht’s resignation came after she had repeatedly been criticized for her work in the role and multiple political scandals. (ILKHA)
