The government declared a state of emergency in three departments, three provinces, and one district for 30 days from Sunday, according to an extraordinary digital edition of the official newspaper El Peruano.

With the declaration of a state of emergency, the constitutional rights of the inviolability of the home and the freedoms of transit through the national territory, of assembly, and of personal liberty and security have been suspended.

Peruvian government imposed a month-long state of emergency in December after protests erupted following the ousting and detention of President Pedro Castillo.

Castillo was ousted after his dismissal by Congress and arrest for having announced the dissolution of Congress, the intervention of the state apparatus, and the establishment of an "emergency government", which has been characterized as a self-coup attempt.

Among the main demands of the demonstrators are the dissolution of Congress, the resignation of the current president Dina Boluarte, new elections, the release of Pedro Castillo, and the installation of a constituent assembly. (ILKHA)
