Turkish police nab 14 irregular migrants, arrest human smuggler in Kars
Turkish police have nabbed 14 irregular migrants being packed into a single vehicle in eastern Kars province.
Provincial Gendarmerie teams stopped a car on suspicion at the road checkpoint in Digor district.
During the operation, 14 irregular migrants, who were packed into the car, have been caught and an organizer has been detained.
The necessary procedures for the deportation of the migrants have been launched, officials said.
Historically, Turkey has been a country of origin, transit, and destination for migrants and was a crossroads between Europe and Asia.
Recent regional events have contributed to Turkey increasingly becoming a major destination and transit country for those fleeing conflict, poverty, and disasters.
Turkey hosts one of the largest migrant and refugee populations in the world. (ILKHA)
