Türkiye’s education expenditure rises by 27.1 pct

When evaluated according to educational levels, education expenditure increased at most in tertiary education with 37.7% and lower secondary school with 28.3% in 2021 compared to the previous year.

The percentage of education expenditure in GDP was 4.8%

Expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP) was 5.4% in 2020 and 4.8% in 2021. Government expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP was 4.0% in 2020 and 3.4% in 2021.

The largest expenditure amount was spent on tertiary education by public institutions

Public institutions spent 35.6% of their total education expenditure for tertiary education, and 22.3% of the total for upper secondary education. The 39.5% of education expenditure spent by private institutions was for tertiary education and 34.4% for upper secondary education.

72.5% of education expenditure was paid by government sources

72.5% of education expenditure in Türkiye in 2021 was spent by government sources. The share of education expenditure by households was 22.0%.

Education expenditure per student was 15 thousand 500 TRY

While the education expenditure per student in Türkiye in 2020 was 12 thousand 311 TRY, this amount reached to a total of 15 thousand 500 TRY in 2021.

The largest amount of expenditure per student was spent for tertiary education

When evaluated according to educational levels, the highest level of education expenditure per student in 2021 was for tertiary education with 28 thousand 597 TRY.

The highest increase in education expenditure per student was observed at tertiary education

The total education expenditure per student increased by 25.9%. The level of education expenditure per student which reached the highest increase in 2021 compared to 2020 was tertiary education with 37.7%. This was followed by the lower secondary school with 31.9%. (ILKHA)
