Turkey: About 96 pct of enterprises now use Internet

According to the results of Survey on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Usage in Enterprises, while the proportion of enterprises with 10 or more employees with Internet access was 95.3% in 2021, this proportion was 96.0% in 2022.

92.1% of enterprises used fixed broadband connection to access the Internet in 2022.

86.4% of enterprises declared that they used the Internet for business purposes via mobile telephone networks through a portable device provided by the enterprise, such as a portable computer or smartphone.

The proportion of enterprises conducted remote meetings was 30.4%

30.4% of enterprises with at least 10 employees stated that they held meetings over the Internet in 2022. When the enterprises that conducted meetings over the Internet were analyzed by size group; it was observed that 26.6% of enterprises with 10-49 employees, 45.8% of enterprises with 50-249 employees and 76.0% of enterprises with 250 and more employees conducted remote meetings.

68.4% of enterprises provided remote access to their employees

68.4% of enterprises declared that their employees had the opportunity to remotely access the enterprise's e-mail system or documents or business applications/software in 2022. The proportion of providing remote access to enterprise's resources by size group was 66.1% for enterprises with 10-49 employees, 78.7% for enterprises with 50-249 employees and 89.3% for enterprises with 250 and more employees.

51.2% of enterprises had their own website

While the proportion of enterprises had their own website was 49.4% for enterprises having 10 or more employees in 2021, this proportion was 51.2% in 2022. When the proportion of enterprises had their own website was examined by size group; it was observed that the proportion of enterprises had their own website was 92.3% for enterprises with 250 or more employees. It was followed by enterprises with 50-249 employees with 69.7% and enterprises with 10-49 employees with 47.0%.

 When the proportion of enterprises had their own website was analyzed by the economic activity group, it was seen that the highest proportion of enterprises had their own website were 92.2% with the enterprises that carried out "information and communication" activities in 2022. This was followed by economic activity group which included "repair of computers" with 78.3% and enterprises carrying out "professional, scientific and support activities" with 64.9%. The economic activity groups with the lowest proportion of enterprises had their own website were those carrying out "construction" with 34.0%, "transportation and storage" with 37.7% and "wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" with 50.7%.

One out of 5 enterprises had e-sales

In 2021, the proportion of enterprises that had e-sales increased by 6.8 percentage points compared to 2020 and became 19.3%. E-sales concern the receipt of orders by methods specifically designed for the purpose of receiving orders, either via electronic data interchange (EDI) or through websites or apps (web sales). The proportion of enterprises that had e-sales by size group was 18.7% in enterprises with 10-49 employees, while 20.8% in enterprises with 50-249 employees and 32.0% in enterprises with 250 or more employees.

Considering e-sales by economic activity group, "accommodation and food service activities" with 41.4% ranked in the first place in 2021. It was followed by "information and communication" activities with 30.3% and "wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles" activities with 25.0%.

Proportion of enterprises using e-commerce marketplaces as web sales platforms increased

In 2021, 15.9% of the enterprises having at least 10 employees conducted web sales via website or mobile applications. Across these enterprises, 59.0% used their own website or mobile application and 80.9% preferred e-commerce marketplace websites or apps. The proportion of enterprises carried out e-commerce marketplace websites or apps used by several enterprises was 69.7% in 2020.

Proportion of enterprises that had web sales to abroad increased

In 2021, 21.1% of enterprises that carried out web sales of goods or services via website or mobile applications made e-sales to abroad. This proportion was 19.5% in the previous year. When the difficulties experienced in the web sales process by the enterprises that web sales to abroad were examined; it was seen that the most difficulty faced by the enterprises was the high costs of delivering or returning products when selling to other countries with 47.0%. This was followed by lack of legislative knowledge with 30.8% and difficulties related to resolving complaints and disputes when selling to other countries with 30.7%.

17.8% of enterprises employed ICT specialist

In 2022, 17.8% of enterprises with at least 10 employees employed ICT specialist whose main job is to develop, operate or maintain ICT systems or applications. This proportion was 11.8% in 2020. 13.8% of enterprises with 10-49 employees, 32.3% of enterprises with 50-249 employees, and 72.6% of enterprises with 250 or more employees stated that they employed ICT specialist in 2022.

One in 3 enterprises recruited or tried to recruit ICT specialist had difficulties

During 2021, 6.9% of enterprises recruited or tried to recruit ICT specialists. This proportion was 5.0% in 2019. In 2021, 36.1% of them encountered difficulties to fill vacancies for ICT specialists for the reasons such as lack of applications, applicants' lack of relevant ICT related qualifications from education and/or training, applicants' lack of relevant work experience or applicants' salary expectations too high. Among the enterprises recruited or tried to recruit ICT specialists, the proportion of enterprises encountered difficulties to fill vacancies for ICT specialists was 41.0% in 2019.

28.5% of enterprises experienced ICT related security incident

28.5% of enterprises declared that they had experienced at least one of the ICT security incidents in 2021. When the enterprises that declared to have experienced at least one of the ICT security incidents were analyzed by size group; it was observed that 27.8% of enterprises with 10-49 employees, 32.0% of enterprises with 50-249 employees, and 34.1% of enterprises with 250 or more employees experienced at least one security incidents.

Robot technology was mostly used in the manufacturing sector

5.2% of enterprises having 10 or more employees reported that they used industrial robots or service robots in 2022. When the proportion of robotics usage was examined by economic activity group; it was observed that the enterprises using robots the most were those carrying out "manufacturing" activities with 9.3%. 6.1% of enterprises with 10-49 employees, 15.0% of enterprises with 50-249 employees and 41.5% of enterprises with 250 or more employees used robot technology in manufacturing sector.

When the reasons influenced the decision to use an industrial robot or a service robot were examined; it was seen that 78.0% of enterprises decided to use robots in order to ensure high precision or standardized quality of processes and/or goods and services produced. This was followed by high cost of labor with 68.0% and to expand the range of goods produced or services provided by the enterprise with 66.1%.

61.6% of enterprises considered environmental impacts of ICT

61.6% of enterprises declared that they considered their environmental impacts such as energy consumption when selecting ICT services or ICT equipment in 2022. When these enterprises taking into account of their environmental impacts when selecting ICT services or ICT equipment were analyzed by economic activity group; it was seen that the enterprises in the "information and communication" activity group with 77.1% declared that they considered these effects into account. This activity group was followed by "repair of computers" with 75.9% and "electricity, gas and steam, water supply, sewerage and waste management" with 74.2%.

Artificial intelligence was used mostly by enterprises with 250 or more employees with 17.5%

While the proportion of enterprises stated that they used any of the artificial intelligence technologies was 2.7% in 2021, it was 3.5% in 2022. When the proportion of enterprises using artificial intelligence by size group was examined; it was observed that 2.8% of enterprises with 10-49 employees, 5.5% of enterprises with 50-249 employees and 17.5% of enterprises with 250 or more employees used artificial intelligence. These proportions were 2.3%, 3.6% and 9.6% in 2021, respectively. (ILKHA)
