Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri killed in US drone strike in Kabul
The United States killed al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a drone strike in the center of Kabul, the Afghanistan capital.
“On Saturday, at my direction, the United States conducted an airstrike in Kabul, Afghanistan that killed the emir of al-Qa’ida: Ayman al-Zawahiri,” US president Joe Biden said.
Ayman Mohammed Rabie al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian-born physician and theologian, succeeded Osama bin Laden following his death in Pakistan.
Ayman al-Zawahiri's wife Azza and two of their six children, Mohammad and Aisha, were killed in an airstrike on Afghanistan by US forces in late December 2001. (ILKHA)
