Newspaper circulation decreases by 7.2% in Turkey

The number of newspapers and magazines decreased by 6.0% in 2021 compared to 2020 and became 4 thousand 460.

53.6% of these publications were magazines, according to the Turkish Statistical Institute.

Total annual circulation of newspapers and magazines decreased by 7.2% in 2021 compared to 2020. Total annual circulation of the newspapers and magazines published in our country was 925 million 56 thousand 17 in 2021 and 95.3% of this was newspapers' circulation.

The 21.4% of the magazines were published monthly

The 28.2% of the newspapers were published weekly, 27.2% of them were published two-six times a week and 19.5% of them were published monthly. The 21.6% of the magazines were published quarterly, 21.4% of them were published monthly and 17.1% of them were published biannually. The 88.3% of total annual newspaper circulation was daily newspapers, 7.8% was from the newspapers published two-six times a week and 2.5% was weekly newspapers. For magazines, 65.7% of the total annual magazine circulation was monthly magazines while 11.7% was quarterly, 8.7% was bi-monthly magazines and 4.4% was weekly.

The 16.7% of the magazines published sector-specific/professional content

16.7% of the magazines had sector-specific/professional content while 14.9% of them had academic and 8.7% of them had literature/history content. 90.3% of the newspapers had political/news/actual content while 1.9% of them had sector-specific/professional content and 1.9% of them had local administration content.

Official announcement and advertising fees increased by 34.7%

According to the information obtained from the administrative records of the Press Announcement Agency in 2021, official announcements such as execution, tender, notification and recruitment of employees published by the advertisement owners in newspapers in accordance with the provisions of the legislation and the total cost of official advertisements published by these institutions in newspapers and magazines increased by 34.7% compared to the previous year and amounted to 612 million 655 thousand 609 TRY.

In 2021, 72 thousand 052 books were published

In 2021, total number of published materials was 87 thousand 231 with an increase of 11.1% as compared with 2020. In 2021, 87 thousand 231 ISBN were given for 72 thousand 052 books, 329 electronic books (DVD, VCD, CD), 13 thousand 673 electronic books (web based), 815 talking books (online, cassette, CD, DVD) and 362 other materials. In 2021, the number of book banderol sold was 438 million 679 thousand 864 with an increase of 1.3% as compared with 2020.

The 23.2% of publications were published on educational issues

The 23.2% of the materials published in 2021 was on education, 21.1% of them was on adult fiction, 19.6% of them was academic, 16.4% of them was on adult culture, 14.6% of them was on children and adolescence, 5.2% of them on religion. (ILKHA)
