Voting begins to elect India`s 15th president

The voting, which is taking place in Parliament House and state legislative assemblies, began at 10 am and will continue till 5 pm.

National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Draupadi Murmu, and senior politician Yashwant Sinha, the nominee of opposition parties are vying to become India’s next president.

The results will be announced on Thursday and the next President will take oath on July 25 as President Ram Nath Kovind's tenure comes to an end on July 24.

The President of India is indirectly elected by an electoral college consisting of the elected members of both houses of parliament, the elected members of the Legislative assemblies of the 28 states, and the elected members of the legislative assemblies of the union territories of Delhi, Puducherry and Jammu and Kashmir.

As of 2022, the electoral college comprises 776 MPs and 4,033 MLAs (excluding the 90 MLAs of currently dissolved and recently delimited Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly). (ILKHA)
