Muslims held demonstrations in various Indian cities, including the nation's capital New Delhi, raising slogans against the government and calling for the arrest of the members belonging to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The party announced that it had suspended Sharma and expelled Jindal due to controversial comments about the Islamic prophet Muhammad, noting it denounces insults of religious figures.

On Thursday, Indian police in New Delhi filed cases against the two BJP members for “inciting hatred” and other charges, a step that Indian Muslims say is not enough.

On May 27, Nupur Sharma, the then national spokesperson of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made controversial remarks regarding the Islamic prophet Mohammed during a television debate.

Later on June 1, Naveen Kumar Jindal, the then media head of the BJP Delhi unit, made a controversial social media post on the same subject.

The two incidents led to widespread condemnation from Muslims within India and internationally. (ILKHA)
