Türkiye’s inflation reaches record 73% in May
Consumer price index (CPI) increased by 73.50% annually and 2.98% monthly, the Turkish Statistical Institute said on Friday.
A rise in general index was realized in CPI on the previous month by 2.98%, on December of the previous year by 35.64%, on same month of the previous year by 73.50% and on the twelve months moving averages basis by 39.33% in May 2022.
Compared to general CPI, lower annual change observed in 8 main groups while 4 main groups were higher
The lowest annual increase was 19.81% in communication. Education with 27.48%, clothing and footwear with 29.80% and health with 37.74%, were the other main groups where low annual increases realized. On the other hand, transportation with 107.62%, food and non-alcoholic beverages with 91.63% and furnishings and household equipment with 82.08% were the main groups where high annual increases realized.
Compared to general CPI, lower monthly change observed in 5 main groups while 7 main groups were higher
In May 2022, education with 0.41%, communication with 1.49% and health with 1.61% were the main groups that indicated lowest monthly increase. On the other hand, alcoholic beverages and tobacco with 6.53%, recreation and culture with 6.15%, and hotels, cafes and restaurants with 5.47% were the main groups where high monthly increases realized.
In May 2022, within indices of 144 basic headings (Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose-COICOP 5 Digit Level) in the index, the index of 9 basic headings decreased and the index of 5 basic headings remained unchanged while the index of 130 basic headings increased.
The indicator for CPI having specified coverage (B) increased by 61.63% annually and 3.83% monthly
A rise in CPI excluding unprocessed food, energy, alcoholic beverages, tobacco and gold was realized in CPI (2003=100) on the previous month by 3.83%, on December of the previous year by 27.59%, on same month of the previous year by 61.63% and on the twelve months moving averages basis by 34.64% in May 2022.
