Nearly 60 people killed in South Africa flood disaster
The death toll from floods and mudslides in the South African port city of Durban and surrounding areas in KwaZulu-Natal province has risen to 59, authorities said on Wednesday.
“The assessment so far indicates that many people lost their lives with Ethekwini alone reporting 45 so far, while iLembe District in areas such as Ndwedwe, Kwadukuza more than 14 are reported to have tragically lost their lives,” KwaZulu-Natal provincial government said.
“The disaster has affected all races and sectors of our society in Rural, townships, informal settlements, suburbs, and luxury estates,” it added.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will visit flood-stricken parts of KwaZulu-Natal “to offer support to affected communities and assess the response of government and civil society to this critical situation.”
He will be accompanied by Minister in the Presidency Mondli Gungubele, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, and Minister of Police Gen Bheki Cele. (ILKHA)
