European Parliament elects Roberta Metsola as new president
Maltese lawmaker Roberta Metsola has been elected to succeed David Sassoli as the president of the European Parliament.
Metsola, a member of the biggest parliamentary bloc, the European People's Party, has been the third woman to head the European Parliament.
Metsola, a lawyer and specialist in European law and politics, was first elected as a member of the European Parliament (MEP) in 2013, representing Malta.
She was elected as the first vice president of the European Parliament in November 2020.
Upon the death of President David Sassoli on 11 January 2022, Metsola became the acting president of the European Parliament pending the election of Sassoli's successor. (ILKHA)
