Philippines Typhoon Rai death toll rises to 389
Philippines’ death toll from Typhoon Rai has risen to 389 after the storm hit central and southern provinces late last week.
1,146 people were injured and another 64 remain missing, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Most of the victims were hit by falling trees or walls, drowned in floods, or were buried in landslides, according to Philippian officials.
The typhoon was estimated to have caused at least ₱25 billion ($501 million) worth of damage across the Philippines.
More than 488,000 people have been displaced, 428,000 are in evacuation centers, 41 areas have been flooded, 28,000 houses have been damaged, 227 municipalities experienced power outages, and 135 saw telecommunication issues.
The Philippines' Department of Social Welfare and Development further elaborated that over ₱900 million ($18 million) worth of standby funds was already prepared for the people affected by the typhoon. (ILKHA)
