At least 17 dead in Malaysia flood disaster
At least 17 people died and about 70,000 people were displaced after severe flooding triggered by torrential rains hit Malaysia’s Selangor state.
“More bodies have been found as floodwaters start receding. The state government has mobilized all necessary resources to aid the victims of the disaster,” said Selangor state Chief Minister Amirudin Shari at a press briefing.
“At the moment, our focus is to ensure search and rescue operations are carried out effectively and that they reach all people who need it,” he added.
Over 69,400 people were displaced due to flooding in seven states and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, according to the Malaysian social welfare department. (ILKHA)
