Formula One Turkish Grand Prix 2021 starts in Istanbul
The 16th race in the Formula 1 season on Sunday got underway in Istanbul, a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait.
A perfect getaway from polesitter Valtteri Bottas saw him hold his advantage over Max Verstappen as the Turkish Grand Prix got underway on a damp Istanbul Park circuit.
It wasn’t a perfect start for Fernando Alonso, who tried a move around the outside of Pierre Gasly through Turn 1 and got spun around by the Frenchman, who claimed that he’d been sandwiched into the first corner.
Starting P11, meanwhile, Mercedes will have breathed a sigh of relief to see Lewis Hamilton make it through the start unscathed after his engine change penalty.
The Turkish Grand Prix is a Formula One motor race held at the Istanbul Park Circuit, designed by Hermann Tilke. The race was part of the Formula One World Championship between 2005 and 2011, and 2020 to 2021, the latter two being due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Felipe Massa and Ferrari are the most successful driver and constructor respectively, having won the race three times each. (ILKHA)
