At least 17 irregular migrants drown off Tunisia while trying to cross the Mediterranean
At least 17 irregular migrants have drowned in a shipwreck off Tunisia while they were trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italy from Libya, Tunisia’s Red Crescent said.
The boat carrying migrants from Bangladesh, Syria, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, and Mali had set off from Zuwara, on Libya's northwest coast, the humanitarian organization said.
Over 380 other irregular migrants were rescued by Tunisian coastguard teams at the same time.
In 2021, About 900 irregular migrants have so far died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). (ILKHA)
