Amnesty International condemns the Nigerian government’s suspension of Twitter
Amnesty International has condemned Nigeria's government’s suspension of Twitter operations in the country.
“This action is clearly inconsistent and incompatible with Nigeria's international obligations including under the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,” the organization said.
“We call on the Nigerian authorities to immediately reverse the unlawful suspension and other plans to gag the media, repress the civic space, and undermine Nigerians' human rights,” it added.
On Friday, Nigeria's government said it was suspending Twitter indefinitely in Africa's most populous nation after the social media giant deleted a controversial tweet President Muhammadu Buhari shared about a secessionist movement. (ILKHA)
