The relations between the two countries have become strained since 2013 when Egypt’s army ousted Mohammed Morsi, Egypt’s first democratically elected president.

"Our cooperation process with Egypt in intelligence, diplomacy, and economy already continues. There is not any difficulty here. These are not at the highest level, they continue a little below the highest level,” Erdoğan stated.

“We want to continue this process with Egypt in the strongest form. We can take it forward after intelligence and diplomatic relations give a benefit,” Erdoğan added.

Egypt–Turkey relations have strongly deteriorated in the period following the overthrow of the Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013 following a 48-hour deadline on 1 July, marking the end of anti-government protests that took place between 30 June and 3 July that year.

On 23 November 2013, the Egyptian government expelled the Turkish ambassador in Cairo after a months-long diplomatic crisis. (ILKHA)
