The ban will be in effect as of January 31, 2021.

“New variants of Covid-19 pose a real challenge to Canada. That's why we need to take extra measures,” Trudeau said.

The government will mandate new testing and three-day quarantine periods upon arrival in the country.

“As soon as possible in the coming weeks, all air travelers arriving in Canada, with very limited exceptions, must reserve a room in a Government of Canada-approved hotel for three nights at their own cost, and take a COVID-19 molecular test on arrival at their own cost,” the government said in a statement.

The country will also introduce a 72-hour pre-arrival testing requirement (molecular test) for travelers seeking entry in land mode, with limited exceptions such as commercial truckers.

Canada has so far reported 770,793 confirmed coronavirus cases, with 19,801 deaths, and 695,679 recoveries. (ILKHA)
