Turkey’s tourism income decreases by 50.4 in Q4 2020

While 75.4% of this income (excluding GSM roaming and marina service expenditures) was obtained from foreign visitors, 24.6% was obtained from citizens resident abroad.

Visitors organize their travel individually or with a package tour. While individual expenditures constituted $ 3 billion 335 million 869 thousand of the total tourism incomes, $ 577 million 890 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

Tourism income in 2020 decreased by 65.1% and declined to $ 12 billion 59 million 320 thousand compared to the previous year. While individual expenditures constituted $ 9 billion 998 million 320 thousand of the total tourism incomes, $ 2 billion 60 million 999 thousand of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

In this quarter, all expenditure types decreased compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Package tour expenditure (share of Turkey) decreased by 72.2%, tour services expenditure decreased by 68.4%, and sports, education, culture expenditure decreased by 67.3%. In this year the highest annual decreases were in tour services expenditure.

The average expenditure per night was $ 54

 In this quarter while the average expenditure per night of the foreigners who stayed overnight was $ 67, the average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was $ 35.

In this year, while the average expenditure per night for total overnight visitors was $ 61, the average expenditure per night of foreigners was $ 70, average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was $ 44.

Number of departing visitors decreased by 57.7%

In this quarter number of departing visitors decreased by 57.7% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and declined to 4 million 582 thousand 698 persons. While 79.5% of visitors was foreign with 3 million 642 thousand 367 persons, 20.5% of them was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 940 thousand 331 persons.

In this year, the number of departing visitors decreased by 69.5% compared to the previous year and declined to 15 million 826 thousand 266. While 80.3% of visitors was foreign with 12 million 708 thousand 265 persons, 19.7% of them was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 3 million 118 thousand 1 persons.

In this quarter, foreign visitors visited Turkey mostly for "travel, entertainment, sportive, and cultural activities" with 64.9%

The secondary purpose of visit was "visiting relatives and friends" with 15.1% and the third was "shopping" with 9.6%. Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for "visiting relatives and friends" with 66.4%.

In this year, while foreign visitors visited Turkey mostly for "travel, entertainment, sportive, and cultural activities" with 66.1%, Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for "visiting relatives and friends" with 66.2%.

Tourism expenditure decreased by 81.9% 

Tourism expenditure which is the expenditure of the Turkish citizens resident in Turkey and visited abroad, decreased by 81.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and declined to $ 184 million 974 thousand. While $ 182 million 245 thousand of total expenditures was individual expenditures, $ 2 million 729 thousand of tourism expenditures was package tour expenditures.

In this year, tourism expenditure decreased by 74.9% compared to the previous year and declined to $ 1 billion 104 million 545 thousand. While $ 953 million 881 thousand of total expenditures was individual expenditures, $ 150 million 664 thousand of tourism expenditures was package tour expenditures.

The number of Turkish citizens visited abroad decreased by 86.8%

In this quarter number of Turkish citizens who visited abroad decreased by 86.8% compared to the same quarter of the previous year and declined to 295 thousand 981. The average expenditure was $ 625 per capita. 

In this year, the number of Turkish citizens who visited abroad decreased by 76.8% compared to the previous year and declined to 2 million 242 thousand 864. The average expenditure was $ 492 per capita. (ILKHA)
