Turkey’s total health expenditure increases by 21.7% in 2019
Total health expenditure increased by 21.7% in 2019 compared to the previous year and reached to 201 billion 31 million TL, Turkish Statistical Institute said in a statement on Thursday.
General government health expenditure reached to 156 billion 819 million TL with an increase of 22.5%. Private sector health expenditure was estimated to 44 billion 212 million TL with an increase of 18.8%, according to the statement.
The 78.0% of total health expenditure was provided by general government budget
The ratio of general government health expenditure to total health expenditure was 78.0% and this ratio was 22.0% for private sector in 2019. Considering the subgroups of general government and private sector, percentages were Social Security Institution with 51.7%, central government with 25.6%, households with 16.7%, insurance companies with 2.9%, non-profit organizations serving households and all other enterprises with 2.4%, local government with 0.7% in 2019.
Current health expenditure was 187 billion 673 million TL
Current health expenditure increased by 21.1% in 2019 compared to the previous year and reached to 187 billion 673 million TL. Investments on health expenditures reached to 13 billion 357 million TL with an increase of 30.5%.
The 48.2% of total health expenditure was spent at hospitals
Considering the distribution of total health expenditure by health care services providers, the first three ranks remained at the same level in 2019. Hospitals with 48.2% had the largest share in the health institutions which were applied for purchasing health care services and products in 2019. Hospitals were followed by retail sale and other providers of medical goods with 25.8% and providers of ambulatory health care with 11.9%, respectively.
Health expenditure per capita was 2 434 TL
Health expenditure per capita reached to 2 434 TL with an increase of 19.9% in 2019 while it was 2 030 TL in 2018.
Total health expenditure was 4.7% of gross domestic product (GDP)
The ratio of total health expenditure to GDP was 4.7% in 2019 while it was 4.4% in 2018. The ratio of current health expenditure to GDP was 4.3% in 2019 while this ratio was 4.1% in 2018.
The share of household out of pocket health expenditures in the total was 16.7%
Out of pocket health expenditures made by households for treatment, pharmaceuticals etc. reached to 33 billion 626 million TL with an increase of 17.4% in 2019 compared to the previous year. The ratio of household out of pocket health expenditure to total health expenditure was 16.7% in 2019. (ILKHA)
