Governor of Kurdish capital dies from COVID-19
Firsat Sofi, the governor of Erbil, has died from coronavirus at a hospital in Ankara, local reports said on Wednesday.
Sofi, who tested positive for the virus on October 19, was flown to Ankara, the capital of Turkey, when his condition deteriorated.
Sofi, who has been receiving intensive care since November 2, died in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
His body will be returned for the Kurdistan Region for burial on Wednesday.
Sofi was born in 1978 in Choman town of Erbil province in 1978 and got a PhD in International Law from Salahaddin University.
He served as a parliamentarian from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in the regional parliament from 2013 to 2017.
Sofi was married with two daughters, and two sons. (ILKHA)
