The deaths of three civilians and one perpetrator were confirmed in the hours after the attack, but additional fatalities were suspected; several more were injured, with one of them being a police officer.

“As of 06:30 am, this is what we can confirm towards the assault in Vienna's inner city district:

• 3 deceased persons (2 male, 1 female)
• 15 severely injured persons, among them is an officer of the Vienna PD
• The assault was carried out by at least one suspect who was shot and killed by the officers.
• The assault has been considered to have ‘an Islamistic motive’
• The suspect was armed with an assault rifle, among other handguns
• The suspect was appearing to wear an explosive vest which turned out to be a dummy
• The suspect’s apartment has been opened by SWAT and searched.
• The sighting and evaluation of the numerous footages is happening at the moment,” the Vienna Police Department said on Twitter.

According to the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, the shootings were conducted by a number of attackers. One of them was shot and killed, but the Chancellor said "there are still several perpetrators at large". (ILKHA)
