US imposes sanctions on Iran’s court system over execution of wrestler
The United States announced Thursday sanctions against Judge Seyyed Mahmoud Sadati, Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court of Shiraz and Adelabad Prison for their involvement in the trial, imprisonment and execution of Navid Afkari.
"The Iranian regime has subverted its system of justice into a cruel system of repression. Today, the U.S. is sanctioning several Iranian officials and entities for gross violations of human rights, including one of the judges who reportedly sentenced Navid Afkari to death," the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Twitter.
Navid Afkari was an Iranian wrestler who was sentenced to death and executed by the government of Iran for protesting against the regime during the 2018 unrest in Iran, as well as the alleged murder of an undercover security guard from the IRGC. (ILKHA)
